FOR THE LOVE OF A BEAST
“Loving you will be the death of me…how sweet will my last breath be.”
CHAPTER 1
Call Me A Freak
If I had known that the lattes out of Starbucks were twice as quick to get through and twice the calories as anywhere else, I’d have opted for homemade crap. But as it was nearly four a.m and I still hadn’t finished my essay, I couldn’t have cared less.
I stood in the unending queue, hoping that one or two of the ones in front would have to leave to take a leak or answer an important call and I could get home and back to my work. But I was indeed out of luck, the line was going at a snails pace and I was right at the end of it. I never understood why it was as busy at that time in the morning. Nowhere was open and it didn’t seem as if anybody really had to leave for work. I guess it was just the coffee craze that had been sweeping the nation and had finally made it’s way to the little places.
I sighed as I spotted the guy behind the counter slacking a little and his colleague taking a quick smoke. Things like that really frustrated me, especially when I was in a hurry. But I seemed to be the only person in this town that was in a hurry. Everyone went about their business in a cool and calm manner. No worries at all. It wasn’t abnormal, I mean it was a small town outside New York after all, nobody needed to be in a hurry, but I wasn’t one for taking things easy.
Finally, the queue moved. There were still plenty of people in front of me but it was one less at least. I felt a cold gust of wind shoot past and heard the annoying bell ring as another caffeine craving night owl entered the premises. I declined to turn around and greet the new addition. I wasn’t in the mood to start a conversation. I kept my eyes on the counter and shook my head every time something seemed to slow us all down.
“Been here long?”
I knew it, it was typical. There is always that one guy that strikes up a conversation when you have nothing you feel like sharing. I still declined to greet him and kept my eyes peeled on the lousy waiter.
“Too long and too frustrated to tell you about it.” I answered reluctantly.
I could hear him snigger slightly but tried not to pay too much attention to that fact. I was tired, had lots to do and if I had been allowed, would have socked the dude getting served for flirting with the waitress and wasting my time.
“Let me guess…sixth latte of the morning?”
I decided that I was going to be longer than imagined previously and unable to change that fact so I hid the bitchiness and the frown and brought out the smile and the crown. I turned around and to my surprise was greeted by a tall, handsome guy wearing a suit. He didn’t seem much older than myself facially, maybe around twenty-two. For my eyes sake, I stayed with my back to the queue.
“Starbucks expert?” I enquired.
“No, a student in fact. I get cranky after my fourth cup. I just figured you being a girl you’d probably catch up on the crankiness after the sixth.”
He was charming for sure. Terrible at chatting up the opposite sex but it was Starbucks, not the Ritz so he got points for trying.
“Since when do students wear expensive tailor made attire?”
He hinted with his eyes that the line had moved one step closer to coffee heaven so I took a couple of small steps back, carefully so I didn’t tramp on the guy in front. Not that I really gave a damn.
“I have an interview first thing. Wanted to look smart.”
I folded my arms and casually looked him up and down as he read the menu on the board above the counter.
“Work experience?” I asked.
“Sort of. My dad wants me to intern at his company this Summer so I decided to give it a shot.”
I turned back to face the room as another one bit the dust and left happily with their breakfast.
“Well if he wants you there and it’s his company, why do the interview?”
“I’m a fair kind of guy.”
I was only a few heads away from getting what I craved and anxiously checked my watch. I was never going to finish in time.
“What about you, college too?”
“Good guess!”
“Major?”
There it was. The dreaded question and the usual mood killer. I loved what I did, it was an interesting subject and I myself wasn’t ashamed of it. But most others declined to see the beauty nor the interest in it and shunned me when I mentioned what it was. I knew what his reaction would be. I could tell. He seemed like a pre yuppie type, quick to criticize. I wanted to see the look on his face so I turned around in all my glory and informed him.
“Paranormal Studies.”
To my surprise, his face didn’t change that much. He smiled and leaned down towards me a little.
“You major in the Boogey Man?” he asked sarcastically.
I was used to the ridicule so his comment didn’t vex me in the slightest.
“I major in all things supernatural.”
I wanted the two guys in front of me to be quick. I could feel his sarcasm ready to attack me again. Not that I minded, he was cute and I’d soon be out of there.
“Is this a modern day pick up technique you girls are using because if it is, I really gotta get with the times?”
I laughed slightly because there was nothing else I could do or say. I was too tired to argue and defend my educational choices.
“Is it working?” I winked.
We shared a few moments of flawless eye contact before he introduced himself.
“Nick.” he said, holding out his left hand.
“Camilla.” I replied shaking his hand.
It had been the first time in a long time that a guy hadn’t been put off or should I say ran for the hills after hearing what I studied. I usually met young guys whilst I waited for my coffee, that wasn’t a rarity but meeting one that seemed genuine and more importantly cool with it, that was the strange part.
Finally it was my turn to order and I didn’t hesitate to do so. I ordered my usual latte and a chocolate chip cookie to go.
“Cookie…at this time?” Nick asked.
“I have a long morning ahead of me.” I informed him as I paid for my lot.
I checked my watch again and realized I was going to be pushed for time. The essay was due to be sent to Mr. Ambrose’s hotmail account before eight and I only had a quarter of it done. The only thing that gave me peace of mind was knowing that it was a joint essay and that my partner and roommate Natasha was almost finished her part.
“What you working on?”
“Long story.”
He seemed interested. Whether it was just the usual bull shit patter that was coming out of his mouth or not was another matter but since the likelihood of us bumping into one another again was borderline zero, I didn’t care in the slightest what he was really thinking.
I grabbed my coffee and the small paper bag that contained my cookie and turned to face the handsome and perfectly tailored Nick once more.
“Well it was nice meeting you. Good luck with the internship.”
I made my way outside and with my coffee between my knees and the cookie bag in my mouth I fastened up my coat. It was icy cold and I could see my breath almost freeze in front of me. I fixed my long raven colored hair that was trapped between my black coat and grey zip up and made my way to the taxi rank. My apartment was only a few blocks away but it was too cold and I wanted to get their as quick as I possibly could.
I hailed the first cab that was about to park on the spot and just as I was about to get in, I heard a familiar voice.
“Need a ride?”
I looked up and saw Nick had pulled up in an expensive and brand new looking Mercedes.
“No, I just thought I’d make light morning conversation with a cab driver!”
“Where you headed?”
Getting into a car with an almost complete stranger was something that I never did. He was sitting in the back so he obviously had a driver. His daddy must of taken exceptional care of him.
“Thanks but I’ll take the cab!”
“Come on! My car has got to smell better and best of all, it’s free!”
I smiled and shook my head. He seemed harmless and lets face it, with my expertise, I would have known if he were something other than a rich college boy.
“Fine!” I sighed, giving into to him and his cute as hell smile. “Madison Street, you know where that is?”
He knocked on the glass in front of him and opened the slot.
“Eddie, you know Madison Street right?”
A nod and a smile followed. I apologized to the older taxi driver and made my way over to the black Mercedes. It was a beautiful car indeed and the contents of the back seat were too good to pass on.
“Just so we’re clear.” I warned him, “If you try a Patrick Bateman on me, I have friends and acquaintances that will do their best to make sure you are never found!”
He laughed and gestured for Eddie to drive on ahead as I fiddled with the seatbelt.
“Trust me, I am not Patrick Bateman junior. Even if I was, I wouldn’t risk meddling with a PS major.”
He was insanely gorgeous. Blonde bed head styled hair, lean but muscular frame and gorgeous blue eyes to go with that smile.
“Quick as you can Ed, lady is in a hurry.” he asked politely, winking at me.
“So is this what you do Nick, hang around Starbucks and wait for young girls to turn up so you can use your awful pick up lines and charm them into your carriage?”
“Every morning!”
The ride was short and sweet, shorter than expected actually. I wished I could have stayed and chatted to him a little longer but homework called.
“Here we are then, Madison Street.” called Eddie from the driver’s side.
“Thanks.” I called back through the slot in the tinted glass in front of us.
“Well my lady, I believe this is your humble abode. The pleasure was all mine.” he insisted as he opened the door for me and helped me out.
“Charming!” I replied as I grabbed my things.
He probably did this with everyone but for a few seconds, I felt special.
“Here.” he said handing me a small card. “If you ever want to take another ride in my carriage, call me.”
I took the card without hesitation and saw his name, email and number in fancy letters.
“I might just do that.” I winked.
I thanked him and crossed the street. My apartment was on the top floor of Grove House, a complex for college students. I could see the lights were still on which meant that Natasha was still up and still hard at work.
For some reason, the air felt a little warmer. I didn’t know whether it was caused by a sudden change in temperature or a sudden change in horniness.
“Hey Camilla!” Nick yelled half way inside his car.
“Yeah?”
“If you see the Boogey Man, tell him my little brother is being a pain in the ass and that he is welcome to hide in his closet for as long as he wants!”
I laughed as I found my key collection hiding at the bottom of my bag beneath everything else.
“I’ll let him know!”
After a final glimpse of masculine perfection, he disappeared inside and the swanky auto drove off.
Music was playing softly in the lounge and I could hear Natasha on the phone. I left my keys on the table and threw my bag on the sofa.
“Yes! Of course it’s paid, why do you think I am yelling at you down the phone at this time in the morning”
Nat was always getting into arguments with her older sister Megan. They were supposedly going on a trip to Europe a few weeks after classes ended that Summer and it seemed like it wasn’t plain sailing.
I heard her skyscrapers hit off the wooden floorboards as she made her way through to the lounge. She made a hell of a racket when she was pissed off.
“Yeah…yeah…hold on! Nice of you to join me Camilla!”
She was holding the phone a few inches from her ear and nodding profusely, the kind of nod she gave me when you were telling her something and she didn’t really have the time nor interest in listening.
“Yes Megan, I understand that!”
She looked at me and mouthed “Where the hell have you been?”
I showed her the coffee cup and cookie and mouthed back “Sorry, busy!”
“Megan I can’t get into this right now! I have an essay to finish, a best friend to kill and a teacher to infuriate, GOOD MORNING!”
She threw the phone onto the couch beside me and growled.
“She is unbelievable, everything is my fault!”
I handed her the lukewarm latte. She needed it more than I did.
“Here, get this down you and chill out, we have work to do.” I ordered.
“Camilla I know you too well. Don’t even think about changing the subject. You took nearly an hour to order some milk and a cookie…what was his name?”
She was right. She did know me too well. She wasn’t too happy about me being tardy but I knew she was interested in the reason behind it. I grabbed my Mac and turned it on.
“His name was Nick ok?”
Her stare meant she wasn’t yet satisfied.
“Aha and?”
“And he was really cute!” I answered begging my Mac to hurry up and get it together.
She sipped the latte and smirked.
“So let’s say there was a slight queue. One latte, one cookie, ten people equals thirty minutes. Add a cute guy to the equation and you and that equals…a quickie?”
I glared at her over my glasses.
“Very funny.”
Hope you like it! Really need to get my groove back, been a busy couple of months and writing has been but on the back burner unfortunately :( Shall be able to do more soon! Thanks for your support Tweeties, means a lot! ;) x
“Where are we going?” she snapped, gazing out of the window.
The cool night breeze hit off of her face and lifted her hair lightly off of her shoulders.
Ethan looked over at her and smiled. He knew she was still pissed off at him.
“You’ll see.’’ he replied innocently, mocking her anger.
Mezhgan rolled her eyes and gave the look. That annoyed and somewhat ‘I’m never forgiving your sorry ass’ look.
“Ethan, trust me when I say that I am not in the mood for another cryptic session. Your never ending Rubik’s cube is by far my least favourite game.”
He just smiled. He knew what he was about to reveal would put a smile on her face. He wasn’t working the Lamborghini’s horsepower as hard as usual. He was enjoying the calm of the night and the twinkles that dotted the sky.
“Do you like angels?” he asked her.
She looked over at him and glared. She wasn’t sure what to make of that question or how to answer it. Was it a joke? It had to be but then again, in Ethan’s crazy mixed up world, everything goes.
“Angels don’t exist!” she snapped, sticking her face out of the window again.
“Oh really?” he winked.
He began to speed up a little and enjoyed watching Mezhgan between eye shifts. He knew he should have been watching the road but he loved that confused, intrigued and pissed off look that her face made on a regular basis. She was adorable when she was annoyed.
“Do you mark your diary to get on my nerves?”
“Highly!” he replied jokingly.
He could see her interest heighten although she was trying not to show it.
He pulled into a grassy area high up in the Hollywood hills. It was intimate and surrounded by plenty of trees and rocks. He turned off the engine and stared in front of him.
“Isn’t it spectacular?”
Mezhgan let her eyes become seduced by the stunning vista before her. She had never been so high up and the sky had never looked so clear. So clean. So unspoiled.
The disco lights did cartwheels along the sky and the never ending rows of Skyscrapers looked like works of art rather than the usual eye sores. Los Angeles had never looked so incredible.
“I’ve never seen so many stars twinkle in the sky like that.” she replied, gazing in awe.
Ethan let her take in the impeccable view. He loved seeing her smile.
“Come on, I want to show you something very special.”
He opened the door at her side and took her hand in his. He guided her to a slightly higher point a few feet away and they each sat down on a boulder, watching the world beneath them go by.
“What is it?” she asked.
“Shhh…Quiet, they don’t like noise.” he whispered.
“They?” she replied delicately.
All they could hear was the distant music from the clubs and bars and the horns beeping from a far. Crickets were making noises all around them and the leaves rustled in the breeze. Mezhgan still wasn’t sure what she was supposed to be looking at or listening for.
“Ethan what…”
“Shhh…Any minute now.”
She kept her eyes focused on the starry sky. Each twinkle was so bright it reminded her of the camera flashes at the various premieres she had attended with her mum.
She stopped and noticed something. It was something she had never set eyes on before. She couldn’t believe it. There, gliding through the cloudless, starry sky was a beautiful woman. She was all in white, a white tunic like garment that floated and blew with the wind, revealing her perfect porcelain skin. Her long golden hair made waves in the wind and glowed under the stars infinite shine.
Mezhgan was speechless. It wasn’t the fact that she was seeing someone flying that rendered her wide eyed and mesmerized, but how. She had wings. But not just any wings, these were big, mighty, super sized wings. Almost too big for the woman’s tiny frame to handle. They were a silvery shade, or so they seemed beneath the starlit sky.
She wasn’t just gliding freely for leisure, she was looking down on the city of Los Angeles, checking on it almost.
Mezhgan swallowed hard and gasped. She was unable to stop staring.
“It’s…She’s…She’s an angel.”
Ethan was just as captivated although he had witnessed this kind of thing more than once.
“Stunning isn’t she?”
She nodded still unable to believe her eyes.
“But…How? I thought angels were a myth?”
Ethan chuckled to himself, shaking his head.
“Well I bet Hellhounds and Vampires used to be just a myth too right?”
She looked at him, still with a grin on her face.
“Did you really think that all this bad would exist and there wouldn’t even be the slightest glimmer of good?” he asked, still focusing on the angelic presence.
She had never felt so elated.
“This feeling I have right now, this happiness…It’s unreal.”
Ethan pointed to the beauty painting the sky with her movements.
“Angels radiate happiness. They cause content. Those who witness them are blessed with a sheer feeling of pure bliss, even if it only lasts a few seconds.”
He stood up and breathed in the smell of honeysuckle and pine. He smiled as he watched the angel spread her massive wings and curve around the sky, always looking down to the ground.
“I’ve seen them so many times and I still get stunned by their beauty. Not only do they radiate happiness and warmth but they give off a sense of integrity, a sense of hope. I never tire of feeling that sensation of utter content.”
Mezhgan wiped away a tear that had fallen from her left eye. She was so happy. Not only because of the happiness being penetrated through her by the angels’ presence but because she finally realized that there was a chance that heaven existed.
She looked up at Ethan. He was just as breathtaking and angelic, if not more. The moonlight hit off of his perfect bone structure, illuminating his beautiful blue eyes. He looked different. There was a genuine look of happiness on his face. But she noticed that blissful look fade quickly, too quick in fact. He looked concerned and hurried over to the edge of the hill.
“What’s the matter?” she asked in a worried tone.
Ethan looked confused.
“Something’s wrong.” he muttered.
“What do you mean?”
“Look!” he replied, pointing to the sky.
She couldn’t believe it. The sky was full of them. They all looked very similar and moved in the same manner. But they weren’t silent. They were making some kind of noise. Something between a cry and a whisper.
Mezhgan had never seen anything so incredible. They looked like flying princesses.
“There are so many of them!” she gasped in disbelief.
“Something’s going on down there.” said Ethan, making his way over to his car.
She wasn’t ready to leave. She wanted to witness the incredible view a little longer.
“Meesh! We have to go now!” he yelled.
She snapped out of her blissful trance and ran over to the car. She got in, quickly fastening her seatbelt.
“Where are we going?” she asked as Ethan turned the Lambo around and sped off down the hill.
“They don’t usually show up in groups unless something is wrong. They don’t normally fly as low as that nor do they earth.”
Mezhgan held on to the door and the dashboard. Ethan’s driving was terrible when he was in a hurry. It was riding Space Mountain backward while on speed or something.
“Wow!” she yelled in an attempt for him to slow down. “Easy Ethan, not so fast…Earth?”
He didn’t slow down. He wanted to get to the city centre as fast as he could.
“Angels don’t usually touch down. They stay in the sky between the Earth’s surface and the celestial plane. Walking on Earth endangers them.” he informed her as his frantic driving worsened.
She looked over at him rather confused. The traffic was heavy but that didn’t stop him from racing through it and playing dare devil dodgems.
“I thought angels were immortal?” she asked, still hanging on to the dashboard for dear life.
Ethan sped down the highway without taking his eyes off of the road and increasing his velocity even more.
“Not on Earth.” he replied.
